Want to make your own knife with your own design, but without hardening it yourself?

Then we are pleased to announce that Storbua.no now offers hardening of knife steel and other steel tools again. Here you can have all blades that you make yourself hardened according to your own design. You can also buy ready-hardened steel for sharpening of blades.

How big leaves can you cure?

In practice up to 50cm length is max. Height should not be a problem, but would not go higher than 15cm. Our electronically programmable hardening oven has a chamber of 25x17.5x50cm and goes up to 1200 degrees.

Why not harden yourself?

We encourage everyone to try hardening themselves, but for many it is not desirable, or difficult to start with. You need equipment and knowledge that many people do not want to start with from the start. To harden simple steels, you can do this with a simple charcoal furnace based on charcoal and air supply with a hairdryer, but stainless steels have higher requirements for the hardening process, such as precise temperature and holding time of several tens of minutes. Our furnace can handle high temperatures and makes it possible to keep the temperature stable for optimal soak over longer periods, which is necessary when hardening high-alloy and stainless steels. We also offer hardening furnaces for those who want to harden themselves.

Are there any other additional costs?

Receiving, unpacking, hardening and tempering are included, but return shipping is additional. Because the knife blades are valuable, we do not send them by letter. A reminder that it is possible to shop for more than the free shipping limit, then return shipping is also free. So apart from any shipping costs, there are no costs in addition to the price you see here .

Are you calling too?

Yes, tempering is included. It should be done quickly after the blade has cooled, so it is part of our hardening program that we perform for each knife blade.

How does it work?

  1. The knife blades are sent to us. The postal address can be found at the bottom of the store page (contact us if necessary). Remember to pack SOLID to avoid damage/bending!
  2. The knife blades are received, prepared and hardened here by Storbua.
  3. You place your next order, and include the curing service.
  4. Fully hardened blades are safely packaged with the goods and shipped together.

This way you can have your blades hardened and new materials sent to you, and you will save on postage in addition to including tracking.

Hardening stainless/high alloy steel is a more extensive process than carbon steel. An airtight envelope of stainless steel foil must be created to prevent the steel from reacting with oxygen during the heating and holding time. Most stainless steels require high temperatures and longer holding times at a stable temperature. However, we offer these at the same price for simplicity in pricing.

When will the leaves be cured if I send them today?

Curing does not happen every week, but it is done by us, without a third party. If you are in a hurry, please contact us for an updated delivery time, ask on chat or send us an email.

Guarantees and risks

There is some risk involved in the hardening process, but the likelihood of problems is very low. In rare cases, the blade may become deformed, cracked or otherwise damaged. In almost all cases, it will be fine, but it is important to be aware that there is a possibility and that we cannot replace your hard work. It is not possible to know in advance whether this will happen. Reasons that can cause defects include, too thin cross-sections, uneven shaping, stress in the steel or the like. Bent warped workpieces, however, can be fixed with a few well-placed blows with this hammer.

What steels do you harden?

We can actually harden any steel, but we do not offer deep quenching, so we recommend sending steel that needs to be deep quenched to someone else. Examples of steels we are happy to harden: 80CrV2, 1095 / 20-steel, O1 / Arne, 15-steel, 52100, 1075 (C75S), AEB-L, Sleipner, Sandvik, ELMAX, A2, D2, A8Mod.

We are also happy to help you with information if you want to cure yourself!
