Beskrivelse:

Handmade turning tools in cobalt-alloyed M42 High Speed Steel from Carter and Son Toolworks – lathe tools of the very highest class, made with pride by an American family business. From the moment they're in your hand until you set them down after a long session at the lathe, they ooze quality.

The system is modular: the turning tool itself is secured in an ergonomic aluminium handle with two Allen set screws, so you can swap tools quickly and only need to buy one handle. Tools are sold separately without a handle for maximum flexibility.

Why M42 High Speed Steel?

M42 is a high speed steel with around 10% cobalt content. The cobalt gives the steel very high “red hardness” – heat resistance – and lets it be hardened harder than ordinary HSS, up to 64–68 HRC. The result is an edge nearly as hard as carbide that stays sharp for a long time and withstands the heat generated at high speed.

  • Long edge retention: conventional carbon steel has no chance, and M42 lasts as long as super steels like PM and 10V.
  • Easy to resharpen: unlike PM/10V, M42 is significantly easier to bring back to a sharp edge.
  • Better than M2: the most common HSS (M2) doesn't last nearly as long.

The edge still needs refreshing now and then – but if you're worried your grinder won't have enough to do, Carter and Son isn't the tool for you.

How the system fits together

  • Handle: aluminium handle in three lengths – 12″ (30 cm), 16″ (40 cm) and 20″ (50 cm). Without an adapter the handle fits 3/4″ tools.
  • Adapter: thinner tools need a 1/2″ or 5/8″ adapter. “A: 1/2″” means the tool requires a 1/2″ adapter, “A: 5/8″” a 5/8″ adapter, and “A: none” that it fits the handle directly.
  • Set screws: available separately in various packs.
  • Allen key: 5/32″ (3.97 mm) for the set screws is ordered separately.

A sharpening manual is included with the purchase of one or more turning tools.

Use: woodturning – bowl, blank and spindle work. Handmade in the USA and covered by Carter and Son Toolworks' lifetime guarantee.
