Small strap you can take with you anywhere to keep your blade razor-sharp!
Description
Even razor-sharp knives need maintenance, so the strap is an invaluable tool that can help maintain the sharp edge.
Casstrom's "Field Strop" is a pocket or packable alternative to our larger straps and is a handy size to take on outdoor trips, or a handy and space-saving alternative at home.
What is a strap and why are they useful?
A strop is used to finish sharpening the edge after sharpening and to maintain the sharpness of the knife's edge. They are easy to use once you know how, and if you strop each time the knife has been used, the sharpness will be maintained for longer, meaning you won't need to sharpen your knife as often with other coarser sharpening tools, such as a diamond or wet stone.
How do I use it?
To use the strap, fill the leather with strapping paste for steel, place the knife's edge against the leather and pull the knife in the direction of the knife's spine (i.e. you pull the blade backwards, away from the edge). Remember that you should not press the knife with great force into the leather, but gently pull it along the surface. The leather's job is only to hold the grinding paste in place, so let the grinding paste do the work of polishing the edge. For the first strapping after sharpening, repeat the procedure about 20 times on each side. One side has a coarser surface and the other a finer one, where the coarse one is intended for the grinding paste. When strapping before or after use, you should not need more than 5 pulls on each side.
