I want to start making knives, but what do I need to get started? | Storbua.no answers

Tommy recently asked us what he needs to get started with knife making, as he wants to make his own knives. So what exactly do you need?

Yes, that was a really good question! The answer varies greatly based on your own assumptions, wishes and budget.
All you really need to make a knife is a blade, a handle blank, and something to shape the handle with, but preferably also an epoxy glue to attach the blade with. Some people say you only need a paring knife to make the handle. I would also recommend a drill and some files to make holes for the tang, which is the part of the knife blade that goes into the handle.

So the question then is perhaps what tools you already have and how high on the equipment ladder you want to start.

If you have a drill and a sharp paring knife, you can find a nice little blade to start with and buy a piece of birch or cherry or something soft and smooth, then shape the shaft and glue it with gflex epoxy glue.
