Have you seen them on TV? On YouTube? The ultimate knifemaker's tool, namely the belt grinder. This versatile and indispensable piece of machinery, known as the knifemaker's best friend, is something every knifemaker should have access to, but unfortunately it is both difficult to obtain and relatively expensive. Below you will find resources for where to buy belt grinders in Norway, both domestically and by import. In addition, we will show some information for those of you who want to build your own.
Buy one or build one?
When deciding whether to build or buy one, there are at least four things you should consider.
- Budget
- Desire to build
- Ambition level and skills
- Access to what is needed
It is of course more expensive to buy one than to make one yourself, but if you have a desire to build, and a level of ambition that matches your skills, starting a construction project can be a lifesaver. Sizes? 2x72" or 2x48? How about 50x2000mm?
What you don't need to think about, however, is belt size. It's obvious that you should go for a machine that can use both 2x72" belts and 50x2000mm. This is mainly due to the selection of belts in this dimension, in addition to the fact that they last longer than the sanding belts with shorter dimensions.
